Today I got to take my "Design of Public Spaces" students into the 2nd Avenue Subway Construction Site

As the conclusion of our week of hands-on, experiential courses, we took our "Design of Public Spaces" students down into the 2nd Avenue subway tunnel construction site. A team of women engineers gave us a thorough slideshow explaining how the project technically works and then escorted us down into the site. This was real-world, public space design and our girls (and our teachers) benefited greatly! I am so thankful to the MTA and our connection for helping us make this program a reality. I wish I could post the photos I took, but the MTA asks that photos from below ground not be published. The cavern beneath 2nd Avenue is a site to behold, and the sandhogs are doing some incredible digging.

New York City will be the better for it when phase 1 of the project opens in 2016.
